Michael Andrew Fox, known as Michael J. Fox, is a Canadian-born film and television actor. His best-known roles include Marty McFly in the Back to the Future trilogy (1985-1990), Alex P. Keaton in the television series Family Ties (1982-1989), which earned him three Emmys and a Golden Globe, and Mike Flaherty in Spin City (1996-2000), for which he won an Emmy and three Golden Globes. He ended his acting career after being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Despite experiencing difficulties with movement and speech due to Parkinson's, he has not lost his zest for life. Through the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, he has supported research into treatments for the disease, raising $78 million for the foundation between 2000 and 2006. His foundation particularly supports research into early diagnosis of Parkinson's. He married American actress Tracy Pollan in 1988. They have four children: Sam Michael Fox (b. 1989), twins Aquinnah Kathleen and Schuyler Frances Fox (b. 1995), and Esmé Annabelle Fox (b. 2001). Fox became a US citizen in 2000.
