Audrey Justine Tautou is a French actress. She is best known for her role as Amélie Poulain in the 2001 film Amélie. Born in Beaumont in 1976, she grew up in Montluçon. Her father, Bernard Tautou, was a dentist, and her mother, Eveline, was a teacher. Tautou, who was involved in acting from a young age, received acting training at Cours Florent in Paris. In 1999, she starred in her first film, Vénus beauté (institut), where her role as Marie earned her great success and a César Award for Most Promising Actress. However, her breakthrough came two years later with Jean-Pierre Jeunet's Amélie. As Amélie Poulain, a young Parisian who manages to touch the lives of those around her, she portrayed one of the most recognizable roles in French cinema and achieved worldwide fame. Following Amélie, she starred in À la folie... pas du tout, playing Angélique, an erotomaniac, and Dirty Pretty Things, where she played Senay, a Turkish immigrant trying to survive in England. In 2004, she again starred in another Jeunet film, A Very Long Engagement, playing Mathilde, who searches for her fiancé lost in the war, and was once again critically acclaimed. After Amélie, she was nominated for a second César Award for Best Actress. In 2006, she starred alongside Tom Hanks in the major international production The Da Vinci Code, playing Sophie Neveu. In 2009, she appeared in Coco Before Chanel, portraying the famous French fashion designer Coco Chanel. She continued to star in films such as A Woman's Tears, The Foam of the Days, Midnight in Paris, and Eternity, remaining among the most valued actresses of French cinema.
