Yorgos Lanthimos, a Greek director born in Athens in 1973, gained fame with his 2009 film *Dogtooth* (Kynodontas) and his 2011 film *Alps*. He was born in Athens in 1973 and studied film and television there. He began directing commercials in the mid-1990s. In 2001, he co-directed his first feature film, the comedy *My Best Friend*, with Lakis Lazopoulos. He was part of the team that designed the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2004 Athens Olympics. In 2005, he directed *Kinetta* solo. His 2009 film *Dogtooth* gained him significant international acclaim, winning the Un Certain Regard award at the Cannes Film Festival and numerous other awards, and receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. After playing an engineer in Athina Tsangari's 2010 film *Attenberg*, he presented his absurdist style once again in his 2014 film *Alps*. In 2015, he directed his first non-Greek language film, *The Lobster*, which won the Jury Prize at Cannes. In 2017, he directed *The Killing of a Sacred Deer*, featuring Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman. In 2018, he directed *The Favourite*, starring Emma Stone. He is married to actress Ariane Labed.
