Leonard Simon Nimoy (1931-2015) was an American actor best remembered for his portrayal of Mr. Spock in the original Star Trek series (1966-69). Born in Boston, Massachusetts to Jewish immigrants from Iziaslav (now in Ukraine), he began acting in local theaters at a young age. Despite initial objections from his barber father, he pursued acting and received training. He served in the military from 1953-1955. During this time, he appeared in numerous B-movies and television shows. His breakthrough role came in 1966 with the Star Trek television series. His portrayal of Mr. Spock brought him worldwide fame, a role he reprised in subsequent Star Trek films, most recently with a cameo in Star Trek Into Darkness (2013). Beyond Star Trek, he appeared in many other shows, including Mission: Impossible (1969-71) and Fringe. In early 2014, Nimoy was diagnosed with COPD and received treatment at UCLA. He passed away at his home in Bel Air, Los Angeles on February 27, 2015. He married actress Sandra Zober in 1954, and they had two children, Julie (1955) and Adam (1956). They divorced in 1987. He married another actress, Susan Bay, in 1989 and remained married to her until his death. Two autobiographies were published: I Am Not Spock (1975) and I Am Spock (1995). His birthplace, Boston, honored him by declaring November 14, 2009, as Leonard Nimoy Day.
