Leonardo Wilhelm DiCaprio is an American actor. Considered one of the most important actors of the 21st century, DiCaprio has starred in films that have grossed billions of dollars worldwide. He was born in Los Angeles, California in 1974. His mother, Irmelin, was a German-born secretary, and his father, George DiCaprio, was an Italian-American comic book artist. While examining DaVinci's works at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Irmelin felt her unborn son kick, inspiring her to name him Leonardo. Wilhelm was his grandfather's name. However, his parents separated when he was one year old. DiCaprio was raised by his mother, and spent part of his childhood living with his grandparents in Germany. His half-brother, Adam Farrar, is also an actor. He appeared in numerous commercials as a child. He attended Corinne A. Seeds University Elementary School, Center for Enriched Studies, and John Marshall High School. He made his first major breakthrough in 1991 with the TV series Growing Pains. He then starred alongside Robert De Niro in This Boy's Life, a role he secured after being personally chosen by De Niro from among 400 other candidates. In 1993, he played Johnny Depp's intellectually disabled brother in What's Eating Gilbert Grape. In 1995, he further proved his talent in The Basketball Diaries. In 1996, he played Romeo in Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet, earning a Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival for his performance. In 1997, Titanic propelled him to superstardom. In 2005, he won a Golden Globe for Best Actor – Drama for The Aviator. He won another Golden Globe in 2013 for The Wolf of Wall Street. In 2015, he finally won an Oscar for his role in The Revenant, his fifth acting nomination. He has also won numerous other awards, including BAFTAs. DiCaprio's personal life, frequently documented by the tabloids, has included relationships with several models, notably Gisele Bündchen and Bar Refaeli.
