Liv Johanne Ullmann is a Norwegian actress, particularly renowned for her roles in Ingmar Bergman's films such as Persona and Shame. Born in Tokyo, Japan on December 16, 1938, to Norwegian engineer Erik Viggo Ullmann (1907-1945) and Janna Erbe Ullmann (1910-1996), her name, Liv, means 'life' in Norwegian. Due to her father's work, she moved to Canada, then New York and Miami. She lost her father at a young age during brain surgery. Subsequently, she moved to Trondheim, Norway, and attended Trondheim International School. Her interest in theatre led her to acting. Her career took off after meeting the legendary Swedish director Ingmar Bergman. Ullmann had both a professional and personal relationship with Bergman, starring in films like Persona, Shame, The Passion of Anna (1969), Cries and Whispers (1972), and Autumn Sonata (1978), which solidified her place in cinema. She also gained recognition for her role in The Immigrants (1971), winning a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress and receiving an Oscar nomination. She was nominated again for an Oscar in 1976 for Bergman's Face to Face. Remaining active in the film industry, she directed the film Miss Julie in 2014.
