Patti Smith, born Patricia Lee Smith in 1946 in Chicago, is an American musician and poet. Her debut album, Horses, released in 1975, made her one of the most influential figures in the birth of punk rock, earning her the title of "godmother of punk." She combined the performance style of Beat poetry with garage rock, challenging the disco era with her androgynous style while introducing American youth to 19th-century French poetry. She is widely known for her song "Because the Night," co-written with Bruce Springsteen, which reached number 13 on the charts. In 2005, she was awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture for her contributions to literature and culture. She was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. She was married to Fred Sonic Smith from 1980 to 1994 and they had two children, Jackson (b. 1982) and Jesse (b. 1987).
