Greta Celeste Gerwig is an American actress and director. Born in Sacramento, Gerwig's mother, Christine, was a nurse, and her father, Gordon, was a financial advisor. She graduated from Barnard College with degrees in English and Philosophy. Initially aspiring to be a screenwriter, Gerwig's acting career began in 2006 with a small role in Joe Swanberg's film LOL. This exposure opened other doors for her. She had her first directorial experience at age 25 with the 2008 film Nights and Weekends, which she co-directed with Swanberg. She became a familiar face to cinema audiences through films like No Strings Attached and Damsels in Distress. Her performance in the 2012 film Frances Ha, which she also wrote and starred in, garnered significant praise and acclaim. Following this, she took on significant roles in mostly independent films such as Lola Versus, The Humbling, Mistress America, Maggie's Plan, and Wiener Dog. She also played White House Social Secretary Nancy Tuckerman in Jackie, a film about a segment of Jackie Kennedy's life starring Natalie Portman. In 2017, Gerwig wrote and directed Lady Bird, her first solo writing and directing effort. Lady Bird received overwhelmingly positive reviews, and Gerwig earned considerable praise. The film won the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Greta Gerwig was also nominated for a Golden Globe and a BAFTA Award for Best Screenplay. She has been with director Noah Baumbach since 2011.
