Katherine Mathilda Swinton, known as Tilda Swinton, is a British actress. Born in London in 1960, she is the child of Australian Judith Balfour (1929-2012) and the renowned British General Sir John Swinton (1925-2018). Swinton, who has three brothers, comes from a very established family with Scottish roots. While attending West Heath Girls' School, she was a classmate of Diana Spencer, who would later become Princess Diana. During her university years, she participated in volunteer work in Kenya. She graduated from the Social and Political Studies department of New Hall, Cambridge University. Beginning to perform on stage during her university years, Swinton joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1984. She made her film debut in 1986 with the film *Caravaggio*. In 1992, she played Orlando in the film adaptation of Virginia Woolf's novel of the same name. In the 1990s, she primarily acted in British productions, but in the 2000s, she began appearing in Hollywood films. This shift occurred particularly after the 2001 film *The Deep End*, which brought her her first Golden Globe nomination. Following films like *Vanilla Sky* and *Adaptation*, she played Gabriel in *Constantine*. In Jim Jarmusch's 2005 film *Broken Flowers*, she played Penny, one of Bill Murray's ex-lovers. She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as lawyer Karen Crowder in the 2007 film *Michael Clayton*, starring George Clooney. In addition to the Academy Award, she is also a recipient of the BAFTA Award. In 2009, she starred in Luca Guadagnino's *I Am Love*. She received BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations for her role in the 2011 film *We Need to Talk About Kevin*. In 2013, she portrayed the vampire Eve in another Jim Jarmusch film, *Only Lovers Left Alive*. That same year, she appeared alongside other international stars in South Korean director Bong Joon-ho's *Snowpiercer*. After appearing in Wes Anderson's *The Grand Budapest Hotel* (2014) and *A Bigger Splash* (2015), she played the Ancient One in the 2016 film *Doctor Strange*. In 2018, she played Madame Blanc and Jozef Klemperer in the remake of Dario Argento's famous film *Suspiria*. In 2017, she played Lucy Mirando in another Bong Joon-ho film, *Okja*. From 1989 to 2003, she was in a relationship with Scottish playwright John Byrne, with whom she had twin children, Honor and Xavier, in 1997. Since 2004, she has been in a relationship with German painter Sandro Kopp.
