Sam Rockwell is an American actor. He was born in Daly City, California in 1968 to Pete Rockwell and Penny Hess, both involved in acting. When Sam was two, his family moved to New York, first to the Bronx and then to Manhattan. His parents divorced when he was five, and his father moved to San Francisco. He spent summers with his father in San Francisco and the rest of the year with his mother in New York. He trained at the William Esper Studio for two years. He began his acting career at age 20 in Victor Salva's 1988 film, Clownhouse. He attended J.E. McAteer High School. After appearing in several TV shows, he gained recognition in 1994 through a beer commercial. Following this, he pursued film acting more seriously. He gained attention with the 1997 film Lawn Dogs. He earned significant praise for his role as William Wharton in the 1999 film The Green Mile. Also starring in Galaxy Quest (1999), Rockwell further increased his fame with the 2002 film Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. He gained widespread acclaim for films such as Matchstick Men, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Frost/Nixon, Moon, and Conviction. In 2012, he starred in Martin McDonagh's Seven Psychopaths. In 2017, he won the Academy Award, Golden Globe, BAFTA, and SAG Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as police officer Jason Dixon in McDonagh's Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. He has been with actress Leslie Bibb since 2007.
