Allison Brooks Janney is an American actress. Born in Boston as one of three children to former actress and homemaker Macy Brooks and real estate agent Jervis Spencer Janney, Jr., she grew up in Dayton, Ohio. In her youth, Janney aspired to be a figure skater, but a serious accident that severed her tendons ended those dreams, leading her to pursue acting. She studied at Kenyon College under Paul Newman. She began appearing in television and film in the late 1980s. She had a long-running role as C.J. Cregg on the television series *The West Wing*. In the 2000s, she appeared in numerous notable films such as *Juno* and *Hairspray*. She also did voice work in numerous animated films including *Finding Nemo* and *Despicable Me*. Her role as Bonnie in the television series *Mom*, which began in 2013, once again earned her the admiration of television audiences. She has won a total of 7 Emmy Awards for her successful performances in *The West Wing*, *Masters of Sex*, and *Mom*. In 2017, she won the Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, BAFTA Award, and SAG Award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of LaVona Fay Golden, the mother of champion figure skater Tonya Harding, in the biographical film *I, Tonya*.
