Walter Lassally (1926-2017) was a German-born British cinematographer. Born in Berlin, Lassally moved to England at the age of 13. From the 1950s, he lived and worked in Greece, where he shot many important films. He won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography in 1964 for the film Zorba the Greek. Other notable works include Heat and Dust (1983), The Bostonians (1984), and The Ballad of the Sad Café (1991). He also made a small screen appearance in Richard Linklater's 2013 film Before Midnight. He died on October 23, 2017, in Chania, Crete, where he had lived for many years.
