Zachary David Alexander Efron, known as Zac Efron, is an American actor and singer. His breakthrough role came in the Disney Channel's High School Musical film series, which catapulted him to teen heartthrob status. He later starred in films such as 17 Again, Lucky One, and Neighbors. Born in 1987 in San Luis Obispo, California, Efron's father was an electrical engineer and his mother was a secretary at the power plant where his father worked. He has a brother, Dylan. From the age of 15, he began landing roles in various series. His big break came in 2006 with High School Musical, where he starred alongside Vanessa Hudgens as Troy Bolton, gaining immense popularity, particularly among teenagers. In 2007, he appeared in Hairspray with a large ensemble cast. He reprised his role as Troy in the sequels to High School Musical. In 2009, 17 Again once again won over his fans, after which he began to take on roles in broader appeal films. In the 2012 film Lucky One, he played an American soldier returning from Iraq. In the 2014 film Neighbors, he played a fraternity leader alongside Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne. He reprised this role in the sequel in 2016. Also in 2016, he starred in the comedies Bad Grandpa and Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates. In 2017, he played champion lifeguard Matt Brody in the Baywatch film adaptation. He had a long-term relationship with Vanessa Hudgens, whom he met during the filming of High School Musical in 2005, but the couple announced their separation towards the end of 2010.
