Born in London in 1949, Potter began his career in directing and dance in his youth. He followed similar paths in both dance and directing. In the 1970s, while taking dance and choreography classes at the London Dance School and subsequently founding his own dance school, he was busy making black and white short dance films. During the same years, Potter began to rise to prominence in the theatre, becoming known for his directing and acting work. Potter's first internationally acclaimed film was the short film "Thriller," which he made in 1979. A cinematic interpretation of Puccini's La Boheme, the film became a cult classic in international festival circles. Following "London Story," made in 1980, he continued his directing journey with his first feature film, "The Gold Diggers."
