David Alan Grier is an American actor and comedian. Also known as DAG, Grier is best known for his sketches on the comedy show In Living Color, which aired from 1990-94. Grier was born in Detroit, Michigan, the son of teacher Aretas Ruth Dudley and psychiatrist-author William Henry Grier. His father's book Black Rage, co-written with Price M. Cobbs in 1968, was highly influential. He graduated from Cass Tech, a leading Detroit high school, and later attended the University of Michigan and Yale School of Drama. Grier appeared in a 1980 radio drama adaptation of Star Wars for National Public Radio. In 1983, his performance in the play The First earned him a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor and a Theatre World Award. He later played James 'Thunder' Early in the musical Dreamgirls. He made his film debut in 1983 in Robert Altman's Streamers. His performance as Roger garnered critical acclaim, winning him the Golden Lion for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival. He gained further recognition for his numerous sketches and impressions on the TV show In Living Color, which ran from 1990 to 1994. Grier has been married twice. His first marriage to Maritza Rivera lasted from 1987-95, and his second to Christine Y. Kim from 2007-10, both ending in divorce. He has one daughter, Luisa Danbi Grier-Kim, born in 2008.
