Romola Sadie Garai is a British actress, best known for her role as Briony Tallis in the 2006 film Atonement. She was born in Hong Kong in 1981, where her family lived due to her father's work. Her mother, Janet, was a journalist, and her father, Adrian, a banker. Her grandfather, Bernhard Garai, was a Hungarian Jew who immigrated to Britain in the early 20th century. Garai has three siblings and lived in Hong Kong and Singapore until she was eight years old. She became interested in acting during high school and graduated from Queen Mary, University of London with a degree in English Literature. However, she focused on her acting career, appearing in both theatre and television films. She starred in films such as Vanity Fair (2004), Atonement (2007), and Angel (2007), and also appeared in television series like Emma and The Hour. Garai enjoys cooking and travelling the world. She has a daughter, born in 2013, with her partner, actor Sam Hoare.
