John Mahoney (1940-2018) was a British-born American actor. Mahoney was born in Blackpool, England in 1940. He was the seventh of eight children born to Reg, of Irish descent, and Margaret, an Englishwoman. After World War II, the family moved to Manchester, where they had originally lived. At a young age, he moved to the United States to live with his older sister. After enlisting in the US Army, he became a US citizen in 1959. For many years, Mahoney worked as an editor for a medical journal before discovering his passion for acting in his late thirties. He first pursued theatre, then transitioned to television and film, showcasing his talent. He gained widespread acclaim for his role as Martin Crane in the television series Frasier, which ran from 1993 to 2004, earning him Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. He died in Chicago on February 4, 2018.
