Richard Tiffany Gere is an American actor. His fame rose in the early 1980s, and the 1990 film Pretty Woman catapulted him to become one of Hollywood's leading figures. He won a Golden Globe Award in 2002 for his role in the musical Chicago. Born in Philadelphia, his father, Homer George, was an insurance broker, and his mother, Doris Ann, was a homemaker. While attending North Syracuse Central High School, he played the trumpet and composed music, showcasing his artistic talent from a young age. Also involved in gymnastics, he received a gymnastics scholarship to the University of Massachusetts Amherst. After studying philosophy for two years, he left to pursue an acting career. His first role was as "Danny Zuko" in the 1973 film Grease. He is considered one of the most recognizable and respected actors of his generation in Hollywood. He starred in well-known films such as An Officer and a Gentleman, Days of Heaven, American Gigolo, Pretty Woman, and First Knight. In films like Chicago and Shall We Dance?, he showcased his talents in music and dance alongside his acting. A long-time Buddhist, Gere is also a prominent activist involved in various non-profit organizations. In 1991, he married Cindy Crawford, a top supermodel of that era, but the marriage ended in divorce after four years. He married actress Carey Lowell in 2002, and they separated in 2013. Gere and Lowell have a son, Homer James Jigme Gere, born in 2000.
