Lena Olin, a Swedish actress, holds a significant place in Swedish cinema. She is the daughter of actress Britta Holmberg and actor-director Stig Olin, both prominent figures in Swedish film. Her father's involvement in numerous Ingmar Bergman films meant Lena spent her childhood on film sets, interacting with major Swedish actors like Liv Ullmann and Bibi Andersson. While she preferred a more ordinary childhood environment, this exposure didn't deter her from cinema. To overcome her teenage shyness, she auditioned for Ingmar Bergman's prestigious Royal Dramatic Theatre School. Though not accepted, Bergman gave her a small role in his 1976 film, *Face to Face*. She later gained entry to the Royal Dramatic Theatre, building a considerable reputation in Sweden through performances of Shakespeare, Ibsen, and Strindberg. She continued to appear in Swedish films like *Tabu* (1977), *The Adventures of Picasso* (1978), *Love* (1980), and *One-Week Bachelors* (1982). Two significant Bergman films, *Fanny and Alexander* (1982) and the TV film *After the Rehearsal* (1984), propelled her to international recognition. Her performance as Anna in *After the Rehearsal*, a role written specifically for her, was particularly acclaimed. This success led to international offers, notably a role in *The Unbearable Lightness of Being* (1988) alongside Daniel Day-Lewis and Juliette Binoche. Her daring performance in this film adaptation of Milan Kundera's novel solidified her international presence. She received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in *Enemies: A Love Story* (1989). Although she was considered a rising Hollywood star, her role in *Havana*, a film that underperformed, stalled her momentum. Subsequent roles in films like *Mr. Jones* (1993), *Romeo Is Bleeding* (1993), *Lumière et compagnie* (1995), and *The Night and the Moment* (1994) did not achieve widespread success. After marriage, she took on fewer projects but delivered memorable supporting roles in films such as *Polish Wedding* (1998), *Hamilton* (1998), *Mystery Men* (1999), *The Ninth Gate* (1999), *Chocolat* (2000), and *Hollywood Homicide* (2003). She also appeared in *Night Train to Lisbon* (2013). Married to director Lasse Hallström since 1994, Olin lives near Manhattan with her family. She has two children, Auguste and Tora.
