René Steinke was born on November 16, 1963, in East Berlin. At the age of 14, he wanted to become an actor, but his path was long. He completed his training as a technician, served in the NVA (National People's Army), and worked for a year as an ambulance driver for the German Red Cross (DRK). After all this, he attended the Ernst Busch Drama School in Berlin, graduating with honors. In the early 1990s, after many theater roles, he began to gain recognition as an actor. Now, René appears in various television series. He joined Cobra 11 as Tom Kranich after season 4, replacing Mark Keller. Together with his partner Semir Gerkhan, he catches car thieves, blackmailers, and murderers in this successful action series. The role of a highway patrol officer is a big challenge for the actor: "I've worked on many television productions, but this series, with its 6 million viewers in Germany, is something else entirely." This means getting up at 7 am every day, as filming always starts at 9 am. Years after his role as police officer Tom Kranich in Cobra 11, René decided it was time for a change and left the series after episode 94. However, two years later, RTL offered him a return, as his replacement, Christian Oliver, wanted to leave. René agreed, having missed Cobra 11 after working on some television films. He said, "Where else can I drive a car at 200 km/h except on the Autobahn!"
