David Thewlis is a British actor, best known for his role as Remus Lupin in the Harry Potter film series. Born in Blackpool as the son of Maureen Thewlis and Alec Raymond Wheeler, he was interested in music as well as acting in his youth, playing guitar in various rock bands. He graduated from Highfield Secondary School and later from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He began appearing on the cinema and television scene from the latter half of the 1980s. He achieved great success with his role as Johnny in Mike Leigh's 1993 film Naked. He continued to gain recognition for his supporting roles in films such as Dragonheart, Seven Years in Tibet, and The Big Lebowski. His role as Remus Lupin, a werewolf and one of Harry's father's best friends, in the Harry Potter film series brought him worldwide fame. He portrayed this character in the films after The Order of the Phoenix. After Harry Potter, he continued to demonstrate his quality in productions such as RED 2, The Fifth Estate, The Zero Theorem, The Theory of Everything, and Macbeth. He joined the DC Extended Universe with his role as Ares in the 2017 films Wonder Woman and Justice League. He married director Sara Sugarman in 1992, but the marriage ended after two years. In 2001, he began a relationship with actress Anna Friel, which lasted until 2010. Their daughter, Gracie Ellen Mary, was born in 2005.
