Martin McDonagh is an Irish playwright, screenwriter, and film director. Born in London to Irish parents, he is the brother of fellow screenwriter and filmmaker John Michael McDonagh. His early plays were set in the Galway region of Ireland, where he spent his summer holidays. These, and subsequent plays, quickly established him as a significant figure in British theatre at a young age. His first play not written in Irish, The Pillowman (2003), was performed in numerous countries, including Turkey. His 2004 short film, Six Shooter, which he also directed, won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film. In Bruges (2008) marked his feature film directorial debut, receiving widespread critical acclaim and earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Seven Psychopaths (2012), while not as successful as In Bruges, further cemented his status as a uniquely original voice in dark comedy. His third feature film, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017), won a Golden Globe Award for Best Screenplay and earned him Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for Best Director.
