Michael Shawn Hickenbottom, known by the ring name Shawn Michaels, is a retired professional wrestler. He wrestled in World Wrestling Entertainment's RAW brand. He has been with WWE since 1987. He is one of two wrestlers who were on the first episode of Monday Night Raw and are still with the company today; the other is The Undertaker. Before joining WWE, he began his wrestling career in Mid-South Wrestling and the American Wrestling Association (AWA). He and Marty Jannetty teamed up and won the AWA Tag Team Championship twice. While still under contract with AWA, they joined the WWF. They returned to AWA but became WWF wrestlers again in 1988. After joining the WWF, he began wrestling solo and played the character of 'The Heartbreak Kid'. He led the backstage group The Clique. In later years, he formed D-Generation X (DX) with Hunter Hearst Helmsley and Chyna. That same year, the Montreal Screwjob incident occurred between Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart. After suffering an injury and losing the WWF Championship, he opened a wrestling school. He returned to wrestling at SummerSlam 2002. Hickenbottom is a four-time world champion, having won the WWE Championship three times and the World Heavyweight Championship once. He won the Royal Rumble in 1995 and 1996. He was also the first Grand Slam Champion.
