Margalit Ruth Gyllenhaal, known as Maggie Gyllenhaal, is an American actress. Born in New York in 1977, she is the daughter of director Stephen Gyllenhaal and screenwriter Naomi Achs Foner, and the older sister of actor Jake Gyllenhaal. She spent her youth mostly in Los Angeles, returning to New York for college. She studied Literature and Eastern Religions at Columbia University. Her first acting experiences were in films directed by her father, such as *Waterland* and *A Dangerous Woman*. In 2001, she played her real-life sister in *Donnie Darko*, the film that propelled her brother, Jake, to fame. In 2002, she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Musical or Comedy for her role in *Secretary*. In 2004, she joined the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In 2006, she received another Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress – Drama for *Sherrybaby*. She played Rachel Dawes in *The Dark Knight*, succeeding Katie Holmes in the role from *Batman Begins*. In 2010, she was nominated for an Oscar for her role in *Crazy Heart*. In 2013, she starred in the action film *White House Down* alongside Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx. From 2017, she starred in the HBO series *The Deuce* with James Franco, playing a sex worker named Candy. She has been with actor Peter Sarsgaard since 2002, marrying him in 2009. They have two daughters: Ramona (b. 2006) and Gloria Ray (b. 2012).
