Edward Allen Harris, known as Ed Harris, is an American actor. Born in Englewood, New Jersey in 1950, he is the son of Margaret Harris, a tourist guide, and Robert L. Harris, a bookseller (1922-2014). He had two brothers, Robert and Spencer Harris. A star American football player while attending Tenafly High School, Harris continued playing football at Columbia University in New York. However, after appearing in some minor plays, he discovered a greater interest in acting, and received acting and theater training at the University of Oklahoma (1972-73) and the California Institute of the Arts (1973-75). Initially, he appeared on theater stages. He landed his first film role in the 1978 film *Coma*. In 1980, he appeared in *Borderline*, starring Charles Bronson. He gained recognition for his role as John Glenn in the 1983 film *The Right Stuff*. Continuing his theater work, he was nominated for a Tony Award in 1986 for his performance in George Furth's *Precious Sons*, and won the Theatre World Award. In 1989, he received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor for *Jacknife*, and also starred in James Cameron's science fiction film *The Abyss*. His role in Ron Howard's 1995 film *Apollo 13* earned him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He also appeared in another significant film that year, *Nixon*, portraying E. Howard Hunt. In 1998, he starred alongside Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon in the comedy *Stepmom*. His role as Christof, the creator of the television show in *The Truman Show*, garnered him significant acclaim, earning him another Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor and a Golden Globe Award in the same category. In 2000, he made his directorial debut with the film *Pollock*, a biographical film about the painter Jackson Pollock. Harris also starred as Pollock, earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. In 2001, Harris was named one of People magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People. He continued his acting career, receiving his third nomination for Best Supporting Actor, and fourth overall Oscar nomination, for his role in the 2002 film *The Hours*. He directed his second film, *Appaloosa*, in 2008, starring alongside Viggo Mortensen and Renée Zellweger. In 2017, he appeared in Darren Aronofsky's *Mother!* as the mysterious man who comes to the couple's home. He also starred in *Geostorm* as Secretary of State Leonard Dekkom. He married actress Amy Madigan in 1983, whom he met on the set of *Places in the Heart*. They have one daughter, Lily Dolores Harris, born in 1993.
