Angela Evelyn Bassett is an American actress. Born in New York City in 1958 to Betty Jane (1935–2014) and Daniel Benjamin Bassett, she has a sister, Dnette, and a half-sister, Jean. She grew up in Harlem, Winston-Salem, and St. Petersburg, Florida. After graduating from Boca Ciega High School, she attended Yale University, majoring in African-American Studies. After graduating in 1980, she earned a Master's degree from the Yale School of Drama. After working in jobs such as a receptionist, she moved to New York City to pursue a professional theater career. She began appearing in television and films in the mid-1980s. In the early 1990s, she became a renowned actress, gaining recognition for her roles as Reva Styles in Boyz n the Hood, Betty Shabazz in Malcolm X, and Tina Turner in What's Love Got to Do with It. Her performance as Tina Turner earned her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy and her first Academy Award nomination. In 1995, she starred as Mace in Kathryn Bigelow's Strange Days. In 1999, she co-starred with Meryl Streep and Aidan Quinn in Music of the Heart. In 2001, she worked with Robert De Niro and Edward Norton in The Score. In the 2011 film Green Lantern, she portrayed Amanda Waller, and she played Lynne Jacobs in Olympus Has Fallen and London Has Fallen. In the 2018 films Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War, she played Ramonda. Bassett married actor Courtney B. Vance in 1997, and they have twin children, Slater Josiah Vance and Bronwyn Golden Vance, born in 2006.
