Rob Reiner, known as Robert Reiner, is an American director and actor. The son of famed comedy master Carl Reiner and actress Estelle Reiner (1914-2008), Rob Reiner was born in the Bronx in 1945. His sister, Annie, born in 1949, is a playwright, and his brother, Lucas, born in 1960, is a director and photographer. At the age of 12, he moved with his family to Los Angeles, where he began acting in regional theaters. He studied drama at UCLA and later became a writer for the show *The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour*. Reiner's first film experience was as an actor in *Enter Laughing*, a film based on his father's life. He subsequently appeared in many films in small roles before landing his first major role in the TV series *All in the Family*. Appearing in the series from 1971 to 1979, he won two Emmy Awards for Best Supporting Actor. His character, 'Meathead,' garnered him a large following. During this period, he also appeared in various TV movies. In the 1980s, he turned his attention to directing, making his directorial debut with the 1984 mockumentary *This is Spinal Tap*. Subsequent films such as *Stand By Me* (1986) and *The Princess Bride* (1987) solidified his success as a director. He directed the critically acclaimed romantic comedy *When Harry Met Sally...* in 1988. He also worked with a star-studded cast including Jack Nicholson, Tom Cruise, and Demi Moore in the courtroom drama *A Few Good Men*. In 1995, he directed *The American President*, starring Michael Douglas and Annette Bening. After directing three more romantic comedies—*I Love You to Death*, *Alex & Emma*, and *Rumor Has It*—he helmed *The Bucket List* (2007), starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. Throughout his career, he has predominantly directed romantic comedies and comedies appealing to a wide age range. He married Penny Marshall, a fellow cast member from *All in the Family*, in 1971. He raised Penny's daughter from a previous relationship, Tracy, born in 1964, giving her his last name, before separating from Marshall in 1981. He remarried photographer Michele Singer in 1989, and they have three children: Jake (b. 1991), Nick (b. 1993), and Romy.
