Kaplan Chuck O’Malley ist ein aufgeschlossener, junger Pfarrer in einer katholischen Kirche in einem herunter gekommenen Vorort der US-amerikanischen Großstadt New York. Er arbeitet an der Seite des mürrischen Pfarrer Fitzgibbon, der wenig von den neumodischen Ideen des jungen Pfarrers hält.
