Catherine Breillat, a leading director and screenwriter of 20th-century French cinema, decided to adapt her novel "Bad Love" to the big screen after Isabelle Huppert, at the age of 56, suffered a stroke that paralyzed the left side of her body, resulting in a 5-month hospital stay. Wishing to quickly return to filmmaking, Breillat met the notorious con man Christophe Rocancourt, also known as Kool Shen, and repeatedly paid him to act in and write the screenplay for her film. Over a period of 1.5 years, she transferred an astounding €627,000 to him. Breillat, drawing on past experiences, both wrote and directed the film.
