The film begins, adhering strictly to the novel's narrative and characters, with K.'s arrival in a small town on a snowy winter day. K., who may be there only briefly – a fact we may never know – is accepted by the townspeople, through Kafkaesque coincidences, as a land surveyor. However, K.'s concerns extend beyond simply finding lodging; the ambiguous power of the Castle that dominates the town becomes the beginning of a long – and possibly interminable – puzzle for him.
