The film is based on the Valerie Plame scandal in the US, a conspiracy by the US government following Joseph Wilson's report that Iraq did not possess nuclear weapons. The leak to the press revealing Wilson's wife's identity as a CIA agent, in retaliation, would later be traced to Scooter Libby, Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff.
