Veniamin "Venya" Yuzhin, a high school student in Russia, refuses to take a co-ed swimming class. His mother is called to school, and when she explains Venya's shyness, it's interpreted as an act of "religious defiance." Venya is somehow excused from the class, and emboldened, he begins preaching religious sermons from the Bible to his classmates. When Elena Krasnova, an enlightened biology teacher, challenges Venya's teachings, he embarks on a ruthless campaign to eliminate her and establish his own religious community, sparking a fierce conflict between them.
