Jason Reitman's latest film, which premiered in Telluride in August, recounts the behind-the-scenes story of one of the most significant nights in US television, cultural, and comedy history: October 11, 1975, the frantically chaotic 90 minutes leading up to the live broadcast of the first episode of NBC's Saturday Night program, later called Saturday Night Live. Despite the momentous occasion, the writers are drunk, there's a fire on set, the cast is attacking each other, and the crew is essentially in revolt. If they can't pull it off in 90 minutes, the network will pull the plug.
