General Information
Mehmet Bozoğlu, nicknamed Yanık Memed (Burned Memed), and his five sons were leading figures in Urfa's sıra geceleri (nightly musical gatherings). His eldest son, Halil, fell in love with Selva, the daughter of Adanalı Duran Ağa. Selva and Halil wished to spend their lives together. Memed asked Duran Ağa for his daughter's hand in marriage. The proud Duran Ağa refused to give his daughter to a musician. Halil, with his brother Cemal's help, eloped with Selva. Memed believed in Halil's love and gave them a grand wedding. However, Duran Ağa's son, Recep, shot and killed Halil at the wedding. Yanık Memed then married Selva, who was pregnant with Halil's child, to Cemal. Fearing a blood feud with Duran Ağa and the potential loss of his other sons, he moved his family to Istanbul. They named the child Halil, after his deceased father. Young Halil knew Cemal as his father, and Selva and Cemal outwardly appeared as husband and wife, but Cemal never looked at his brother's widow lustfully; his life was dedicated to his family. After moving to Istanbul, Memed opened an IMÇ (Istanbul Music Market) shop and continued the sıra geceleri tradition with his family, performing at weddings and private events. Zekiye Nene, the eldest of the family, supported them in Istanbul. Despite life's hardships, Memed never gave up his music and remained optimistic. One spring day, Cemal met Ceylan, a singer with a voice as pure as her face. Ceylan joined Yanık Memed's sıra gecesi ensemble. Cemal and Ceylan fell passionately in love, leaving Cemal torn between his brother's widow, Selva, and his new love, Ceylan.
