Three generations of women from the same family – teenage Ray Elle Fanning, her mother Maggie Naomi Watts, and her lesbian grandmother Dolly Susan Sarandon – live together. While Ray navigates the challenges of adolescence, she begins to understand that she doesn't feel like a woman. To undergo gender confirmation surgery, she needs the legal consent of her father, Craig Tate Donovan, from whom her mother is separated and whom she hasn't seen in years. This process will lead the entire family to make new discoveries about themselves, but ultimately reaffirm the importance of their family bonds.
