Agnès Varda, an 80-year-old prominent figure of the New Novel movement and postwar cinema, often places herself in front of the camera in her work. Her latest film, a self-reflective essay, opens with a scene of the director walking backward on a beach – a kind of floral kaleidoscope, a collage, a fantasy. We're on the beach because someone says that if you open it, the beaches inside will appear. Agnès' Beaches, also featuring her friend Chris Marker's voice as a hand-drawn cat, is a deep, captivating, and touching expression of Varda's life and memory, woven from photographs, old footage, film scenes, and newly shot sequences.
